What to Expect During the Initial Consultation

At Building Bravery, our initial consultation is designed to create a safe, supportive space for your family to share your story and needs. This first step helps us get to know you and your child while setting the foundation for personalized support.

    During the consultation, we will:

    Listen to Your Family’s Story:
We begin by understanding your family’s unique situation, including any recent life changes, diagnoses, or challenges your child is facing. This is your opportunity to share what matters most to you.

    Assess Needs and Concerns:
Through conversation, observation, and age-appropriate tools, we’ll identify your child’s specific needs—whether they’re coping with grief, illness, anxiety, or a major life transition.

    Explain Our Role:
We’ll walk you through how a Child Life Specialist can support your family, including therapeutic play, education, emotional coping strategies, and resources tailored to your needs.

    Collaborate on a Plan:
Together, we’ll create a plan for how Building Bravery can best support your child and family. This plan may include regular sessions, activity-based interventions, or strategies you can use at home.

Our goal is to ensure your family feels heard, understood, and empowered with the tools to face life’s challenges bravely.

If you have any questions or concerns, the consultation is the perfect time to address them. We’re here to partner with you every step of the way.

What Happens During a Child Life Session?

At Building Bravery, our Child Life sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of your child and family. These sessions provide a supportive, child-centered environment (In home or virtual) to address emotional, developmental, and coping needs through age-appropriate activities and strategies.

    Each session may include:

    Therapeutic Play:
Play is a powerful tool for expression and healing. We use art, games, role-playing, and imaginative activities to help your child process emotions, reduce anxiety, and build resilience.

    Education and Preparation:
We provide developmentally appropriate explanations for medical procedures, diagnoses, or life changes. Using tools like medical play kits, books, and visuals, we help your child understand what to expect and feel more in control.

    Coping Skills Practice:
Sessions often include teaching and practicing techniques like deep breathing, guided imagery, and mindfulness. These strategies empower your child to manage stress and build emotional resilience.

    Emotional Expression:
We create a safe space for your child to explore and express their feelings, whether through talking, drawing, or storytelling. This helps them process difficult emotions and develop a healthy emotional vocabulary.

    Family Involvement:
Your involvement is crucial! We may include parents, caregivers, or siblings in activities to strengthen family communication and teamwork during challenging times.

    Ongoing Support:
Each session builds on the last, addressing your child’s evolving needs and equipping them with tools to navigate life’s challenges confidently and bravely.

Every session is designed to meet your child where they are and help them grow emotionally, socially, and developmentally. Our goal is to provide a nurturing space for healing and resilience while empowering the entire family.
